Changing My Workout

April 9, 2014 By Gabe Kapler 11 Comments

It’s time for me to take a hiatus from my 5 x 5 workout.

I feel like I’m breaking up with a longtime girlfriend, the one who is my perfect match. I know we will get back together, but the relationship simply isn’t working in the moment. I love her, but I need some space.

I’ve been performing this workout for over a year, and I can say that as of last week, I was as strong as I’ve been since my early twenties. But my body is feeling a bit beat up in the moment. My right hip is trying to tell me something (“you’re old”), I’m slightly run down, and I’m frankly a bit bored.

There are many variables at play. I’m doing TV analysis for Fox Sports 1 at nights, getting home pretty late, and still waking up at the crack of dawn to feed my boys and get them off to school. Basically, my sleep schedule is not perfectly dialed in. While I’m a believer in the world’s greatest energy drink, my coffee intake is at an all time high and feeling excessive. I’m definitely getting plenty of anti-inflammatory foods.

Sometimes, you just feel in your bones, literally and figuratively, that you need a break. I haven’t decided what the alteration to my workout regime will be, but it’s going to start today (Wednesday). It might be lower weight, it might be yoga, it might be a lean towards a traditional bodybuilding routine, and it could be high intensity training.

Whatever my path, it will be temporary and I’ll be back to 5 x 5 trying to set new records. My responsibility to you, my friends, is to keep you abreast so that we can best sharpen each other. I want you in my brain, and I want to be in yours.

5 x 5 workout, we need to talk. It’s not you, it’s me.

I’ll keep you posted,

Kap

Other option is take a week off and continue 5×5 but on Monday work to 100 % of 5rm wednesday 80% of 5rep max Friday 90% of 5 rep max and instead of squats do box squats. Foam roll those hips and it bands

Similar boat on my end, Gabe. I started some pilates workouts to supplement my weight training. So far so good. Maybe I missed a post on this, but any thoughts on pilates in general?

I’ve also had some problems with my hips tiring out too. Have you tried “flossing” with compression bands? That’s something that’s helped me.
